This is a 26.5" x 38.5" Roxie Releasing poster for the 1998 Nick
Broomfield documentary film Kurt & Courtney featuring archive
footage of the late Kurt Cobain and interviews with people familiar
with the circumstances of Cobain's death. Synopsis: This film is a
wide-ranging retrospective through archival footage and Broomfield's
interviews with former associates on the lives of Kurt and Courtney,
motivated by the shock of Kurt Cobain's death. On April 8 1994 Kurt
Cobain's bloodied body was discovered by an electrician who was there
to install security lighting, next to a shotgun in the greenhouse
above his garage. He was estimated to have died three days earlier on
5 April. The film explores at length claims Cobain was murdered, even
though the coroner ruled his death a suicide, and probes his
relationship with his wife Courtney Love. Some of the film's subjects
say they think Courtney had a hand in her husband's death. Courtney
Love was opposed to the film, refused to be interviewed for it,
refused to license Nirvana's music for use in the film and threatened
to sue the Sundance Film Festival if they screened it. Kurt and
Courtney are strong personalities and the emotions this film conveys
from the people who knew them are powerful and heartfelt. For me, this
emotion is an element of tremendous interest that overcomes the fact
that I have never liked Nirvana's music. I have never been able to
remember one of their songs well enough to hum it, but I can at least
acknowledge they were always in tune and had substantive lyrics that
obviously meant something to a lot of other people.
