novel The Midnight Lady and the Mourning Man by David Anthony
with screenplay by Roland Kibee and Burt Lancaster and starring Burt
Lancaster as Jim Slade. Plot summary: Jim Slade, a former Chicago
policeman, has been released from prison on parole; as part of the
parole agreement, he has taken a job as a night watchman. In that
capacity, he starts an unauthorized investigation of the murder of a
university coed.
