This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian rerelease poster designed to promote the
1959 105-minute Atef Salem black-and-white film We Are the
Students [ehna al-talamiza] based on a story by Tewfik Saleh and
Kamel Youssef with screenplay by Naguib Mahfouz, dialogue by Mohamed
Abu Youssef and cinematography by Bruno Salvi. The film was
originally distributed by the Dollar Film Company. Plot summary: The
three students Adel [Omar Sharif], Hassanein [Shukry Sarhan] and Samir
[Youssef Fakhr Eddine] all had problems. Adel loved his neighbor
Saham [Amal Farid], but her father refused to allow them to marry and
banned him from the house. Hassanein's uncle [Mahmoud El-Meliguy]
came to him from upper Egypt to emphasize the importance of rising up
against the ones who had killed his father. Samir was suffering from
his father's neglect. Samir and the maid Fatma [Ferdoos Mohammed] had
illicit relations and she became pregnant. Adel learned from the
dancer Gamalat [Taheya Cariocca] about Fatma's miscarriage. The three
robbed the bar where they drank to get the money to provide medical
treatment for the miscarriage but the money they stole did not cover
the costs and Fatma died. Gamalat screamed and the neighbors and the
police came. They were all tried and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
According to film critic Sa'ad al-Din Tawfiq this is one of the top
100 Egyptian films.
