Pictured is a 27" x 39" Egyptian one-sheet poster designed by Mohammad
Abdel Aziz to promote the 1962 124-minute Kamal El Sheikh
black-and-white film Chased by the Dogs [al-liss wal-kelab]
starring Shadia and Shukry Sarhan based on a story by Naguib Mahfouz
with screenplay by Sabry Ezzat, dialogue by Ali El Zorkani and
cinematography by Kamal Korayem. Plot summary: Said Mohran [Shukry
Sarhan] worked as a house servant in a student's home. Because of his
mother's illness he had to steal a watch from a student. Raouf Alwan
[Kamal al-Shennawi] got involved, tried to save him and took him as a
protege in crime. Said became a big thief. His assistant Alish [Zein
El-Ashmawy] informed on him so he would be free to marry his wife
Nabawiya. When Said Mahran got out of prison his goal was to take
revenge against Alish and Nabawiya, but he killed some innocent people
instead by blindly shooting at window silhouettes, because Alish and
Nabawiya had fled their home. Said ran away and became a fugitive.
Raouf, who had become a famous journalist, denounced Said in newspaper
articles, turning public opinion against him. Said confessed what he
had done to his former lover Nour [Shadia] and lived in her house. He
also sought solace with a Sufi sheikh but found no relief. Although
Nour tried help him, the police found his hiding place and killed him
on a mountain during a chase.
According to film critic Sa'ad al-Din Tawfiq this is one of the top
100 Egyptian films. The title is literally translated as The Thief and the Dogs.
