This is a 27" x 38.75" Iranian poster designed by H. Sureh to promote
the 2000 Shahriar Bahrani 114-minute color film Saint Mary
[maryam-e moqaddas] starring Shabnam Golikhani as Mary based on a
story by M.S. Bahmanpour with cinematography by Hassan Pooya. Plot
summary: This is a dramatization of the coming of Christ beginning
with anticipation in Herod's court, the birth of Mary and her
childhood in Jerusalem. The film has no Joseph, no trip to Bethlehem
to be taxed and no manger. Instead, after having her baby Mary appears
in the street before the Sanhedrin of Jerusalem. They accuse her of
shaming her people, but the baby Jesus in her arms speaks in her
defense and tells everyone present who he is. This has a devastating
effect on the priests, who had been talking about burning her as
punishment for dishonoring her people.
