This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Wahib Fahmy to promote
a 1950s rerelease of the 1954 Richard Fleischer film Twenty
Thousand Leagues under the Sea based on the 1870 novel of the same
title by Jules Verne, screenplay by Earl Felton and starring James
Mason as Captain Nemo. The poster is not dated, but it was printed
between 1958-1971 during the years of Gamal Abdel Nasser's United Arab
Republic. Plot summary: In 1868 world shipping lanes are disrupted by
rumors of a giant sea monster attacking ships and the sea is no longer
considered safe. The US government commissions an expedition to
establish the truth about the rumored monster, which turns out to be
real but something nobody expects. The film won three academy awards
for Best Art Direction [John Meehan, Emile Kuri], Best Special Effects
[John Hench, Joshua Meador] and Best Film Editing [Elmo Williams].
