IRINN on Mecca Conference

Iranian state satellite TV 9 February:

Announcer: As the leaders of Fath and Hamas have come together in Honorable Mecca to resolve their differences, the Zionists are making no secret of their anxiety over the unity between the Palestinian groups.

The experts believe that these talks are being held at a time when so far attempts at mediation to end the violence by several Arab nations including Egypt, Syria and Jordan have failed.

Although some people believe that Saudi Arabia is trying in this way to play a more conspicuous role in the crises of the Middle East, Ahmad Yusuf, a Palestinian public figure close to Hamas said that while some nations will make use of this opportunity, we have explained our position.

Voice of Arabic Interpreter: The future of the talks is more or less hopeful, but unresolved issues remain that must be studied.

Announcer: The talks in Mecca have begun at a time when Hamas has announced consistently that it will not submit to the requirements of the EU or America, which is something that makes clearer the domestic and international alignments with respect to the Palestine crisis. Analysts evaluate the recent violence between Hamas and Fath supporters in this context.

Voice of Arabic Interpreter: The outlook for the talks depends on the leverage Saudi Arabia is trying to use, and this will take time.

Announcer: While experts see these talks as the last hope for bringing to an end the crisis in Palestine, sources close to Mahmud Abbas have announced that these talks will probably lead to the formation of a national unity government. Thus the Zionists, who are watching this process with fear and hope, are expressing the hope that the differences will remain the same as before.

Voice of Arabic Interpreter: Israel always benefits greatly from increased disagreement within Palestine, and the formation of a national unity government worries Israel.

Announcer: The formation of a national unity government is dangerous for Israel in several ways. The issues Israel fears greatly include increased long-term international financial and economic aid to this government, greater public attention to the government and consequently to Hamas, marginalizing Palestinian compromise groups, the gradual departure of Zionist soldiers from the West Bank of the Jordan River and increased pressure from the international community on Israel to recognize Hamas officially. Moreover, the formation of a national unity government despite Israel's wishes will increase its international legitimacy.

It appears that the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Muslim structures was fully planned to coincide with the Mecca talks so that while provoking the emotions and feelings of the people of Palestine they could show that calm has not yet been established in this region and would be able in a way to undermine the Mecca talks.
