China Satellite Kill Discussed on Iran TV

Iranian state satellite TV (IRINN) broadcast this report on 31 January:

Announcer: China's unexpected success destroying a satellite 500 miles above the earth began China's competition with America; China's meaningful silence regarding this has angered America. The international Baztab Service, quoted in the New York Times, reported that China's success destoying one of its satellites with a long-range missile was an indication of China's increasing inclination to compete with America's domination in space.

Expert Vaziri: Last week China shocked most of the news agencies by destroying a satellite with a long-range missile. China initialy tried to pass over the issue in silence, but this angered America and most other countries. According to the reports that were everywhere in the world, it became clear that in a test China destroyed one of its old meteorological satellites. This was the first time such a thing has happened in space since the year 1985. In 1985 America was pursuing its Star Wars programs; since it thought it was the superior power it stopped these projects.

Last week China, with the shock it suddenly gave the world in this regard, attracted great attention in the world.

Vaziri continues: In the year 2001 the Chinese forced an American spy plane to land in China; they then turned the pilot and crew over to America. The Chinese silence regarding this made America very, very angry. The Chinese have now revived these issues and angered the Americans.

The afterblast of this explosion spread through space at distances between 266 miles to 8,885 miles, and in view of the fact that there are 120 satellites in that area, many of the institions owning these satellites have become concerned that their satellites might be hit by particles from the explosion.

You might ask how a very small satellite could be much of a danger, but I can tell you that this satellite was traveling at very, very high speeds, and when the speed is very great, even a particle the size of a grain of a sand could disable a satellite.

Announcer: The Chinese, who are working hard to update their military technology to compete with well-equipped and trained American soldiers, for example for a possible clash in Taiwan, know well that the Pentagon uses satellites extensively for military purposes: intelligence, missile guidance, and others.

Vaziri: If you look at the last decade, you can see that when the Chinese started missile testing on the Taiwan coast America reacted. They had talks and mild discussions, and since it was possible at any moment for China to clash with America for example on the Taiwan pretext (as you know China is increasing its presence in the world) China had to find a way to confront the advanced technology of America, which now considers itself the superior power.

Since America has been able to see the world for years with its satellites, the Chinese demonstrated that they have the ability to disable an American satellite, and in so doing they showed that they can shoot down American spy satellites. This was a warning for America.

With regard to aerospace issues, the Chinese have been able to launch two successful manned space flights, the most recent of which was not long ago when the Shenzhou VI spacecraft carried two astronauts on a five-day flight.

China and Italy have signed a treaty of cooperation to use robots for moon exploration, and by the year 2008 they are to build three robots measuring 40 to 80 centimeters and weighting 12 to 30 kilograms. They will be used for exploration and mineral sampling.

As has been said, China is planning to spend $160 million on satellites. It is even being said that China has set aside $500 million for its space programs. With all this population and all its problems it might be asked how China can spend this much money. China is most definitely looking for a very great future in space. This investment will not be made without a return!
