This classic black-and-white film by director Salah Abouseif is set in the Egyptian countryside. It is about a childless village mayor (Salah Mansour) with a barren wife. He decides he wants take a second wife (Soad Hosny) who is already married to one of the villagers (Shukry Sarhan). He forces the couple to divorce and marries her, but is unable to consummate the relationship because he is too old and cannot outwit his new wife, who is determined to remain faithful to her former husband; she also has circumstantial support from the first wife (Sanaa Gamil), who does not want a rival in her own home. The story is rich in humor, rural dialect and traditional settings.
